“King of Kings” is a contemporary hymn by Hilsong Worship. Brooke Ligertwood, Scott Ligertwood and Jason Ingram wrote the song, which was released in 2019.
This first a cappella rendition comes from the Academy Singers of Brentwood Academy, a Christian private school in Middle Tennessee.
This song is so powerful — full of truth and life!
It starts off by stating our condition before Christ. A life without Jesus is dark, “without hope, without light.” We were lost before Christ came — lost in our empty lives and separated from God because of our sin (Romans 3:23).
But God’s love for us, his creation, is beyond all measure. He made a plan for our salvation and deliverance — Jesus, in Hebrew “Yeshua” or יְשׁוּעָה. He promised to rescue and restore his creation. And he is faithful to his word.
Jesus, God’s son, is the best that he could give us. Jesus came from “a throne of endless glory” to “a cradle in the dirt” and became a man, a humble servant. There was mercy in his eyes. He overflowed with grace, love, compassion, mercy, life and light. Through Jesus, so many prophesies and promises were fulfilled to confirm once more the character of God, the Father. He is faithful and mighty.

Jesus revealed that the kingdom is coming — God’s kingdom, where the Messiah is not only Redeemer and Savior but also King of Kings. His desire is to bring reconciliation to the lost, to redeem the whole creation, to forgive us of our sins, and to restore us. For our sake, God sent Jesus to die on that cross.
“For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:2). And this joy is the salvation and restoration of all who believe in the name of Jesus. Despite the suffering, the death and the shame, Jesus endured until the end, to fulfill the plan of God and obey to Him.

Jesus didn’t just die. He conquered death. He rose again after three days. He defeated the enemy. The Lamb of God, Jesus Christ, died “for the souls of all who’d come to the Father are restored.” This is the Gospel! Jesus lives and brings hope for all who believe in him as the Son of God and receive him as their Lord and Savior. In Jesus, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, we find forgiveness, restoration, redemption, freedom, salvation and life.
What an awesome love is the love of God for us!
This song brings me joy and hope. It reminds of what Jesus did on that cross for you and me. It reminds me that Jesus died and rose again. He is alive! He lives! He is victorious. So the one who lives in me already defeated death and enemy and has brought the kingdom of life to those who receive him.
“Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:55-57).
“. . . and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen” (Revelation 1:5–6).
