The nation’s latest school shooting — which claimed seven lives, including that of the shooter — took place less than three miles from the campus of Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn., and Lipscomb Academy, a K-12 school. Both are associated with Churches of Christ.

The Covenant School, a private, Presbyterian school founded in 2001, is located near the intersection of Harding Place and Hillsboro Pike in the Green Hills area of Nashville. It’s a site many Lipscomb students, faculty and staff pass as they drive in from the Nashville suburbs of Brentwood and Franklin.

The shooter, armed with a rifle and a pistol, entered The Covenant School Monday morning and killed three students, all age 9, and three adults, including the head of the school, The Associated Press reports. Police shot and killed the suspect.

Lipscomb Academy’s lower school (grades pre-K through 5) was not in session during the shooting, said Kim Chaudoin, vice president of public relations and communications for Lipscomb University.

Lipscomb’s upper school was placed on “soft lockdown,” Chaudoin said. Students were allowed to move freely about campus but weren’t allowed to eat lunch outside. Lipscomb University sent an alert through its Lipscomb Ready mobile app to students and employees but did not lock down its campus.

“There was no indication of an active threat to us,” Chaudoin said, adding that university personnel are willing “to support and assist in any way that the Covenant School community needs.”
