Two years after his debut in the pages of The Christian Chronicle, “Brenton” wants a new title.
W. Keith Brenton
And he’s still getting as little respect as he got when he joined us.
“Brenton,” a cartoon by Rick Gibson and W. Keith Brenton, first appeared in the Chronicle’s print edition in February 2021. The cartoon is based on the wit, witticisms and occasional wisdom of Brenton, a longtime minister who has preached for multiple congregations — most recently, the Eastside Church of Christ in Eureka Springs, Ark.
Rick Gibson
In addition to cartooning, Gibson serves as senior vice chancellor for Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif., where he is a member of the University Church of Christ. He also is a member of the Chronicle’s Journalism Advisory Council.
In honor of “Brenton’s” two-year anniversary with the Chronicle (or perhaps because Gibson had some spare time on his hands), we are blessed us with a multi-panel installment of the cartoon.
The caricature of me in the first panel is spot-on, and the Texas Rangers theme of my coworker Bobby Ross Jr.’s’ office is accurate. (All those awards on the wall are for Bobby, by the way, not for the Rangers.) For what it’s worth, I’ve worked alongside Bobby for 17 years or so, and I’ve seen him wear a tie maybe five times.
