“Step by Step” is a well-known hymn written by David Strasser and made famous by contemporary Christian singer/songwriter Rich Mullins. Several of Mullins’ songs have made their way into our worship services and youth devotionals, including “Awesome God.”

Often described as a “vagabond” or “ragamuffin” Mullins lived a quasi-monastic life, working with charities and teaching music to children on a Navajo reservation. He died at age 41 in a traffic accident in Illinois.

Three years ago, YouTuber Fred Vegerano put together a tribute video for Mullins using an a cappella clip of a child and Mullins singing. The track is from Mullins’ 1991 album “The World as Best as I Remember It, Volume 1

I find this hymn so encouraging. Inspired by the Psalms, it shows the heart of a believer and follower of Christ. This modern-day psalm is my prayer every day. I want to praise him. I have a desire to long for the Lord, our God, every morning.

Here’s another rendition of the hymn by G. Michael Eldridge, or Acapeldridge, a pharmacist with a heart for a cappella music — and a one-man gospel quartet. Check out his catalogue of songs on YouTube.

In Psalm 86:11, we see David’s desire for God: “Teach me your way, LORD, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.”

This short hymn with such a sweet melody echoes in my heart and reminds me to praise God — no matter the circumstances. Day and night I long to give him honor and glory, because he is worthy of all honor, all glory and all power.

Lihle Shongwe, 17, and other members of the Matsapha Church of Christ in the southern African nation of Eswatini sing hymns before Sunday morning worship begins on the campus of African Christian College.

“You are my God, and I will praise you; You are my God, I will exalt you” (Psalm 118:28).
